Research focus
As a clinical research associate, I support the delivery of clinical trials in the field of genetic obesity, both from a clinical and operational perspective. I am medically-trained and continue to practice clinical endocrinology alongside my research work.
Background and experience
I moved to the UK from Italy in 2012, attracted by the quality of the medical training in this country. I trained as a doctor in endocrinology and developed a particular interest in adrenal disease. After becoming a Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes in Cambridge (2021), I decided to further expand my horizons by taking up my current research post in the fascinating field of genetic obesity. I also have an interest in education and have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education in 2022.
Working at the IMS-MRL
I am currently involved in the delivery of multiple clinical trials assessing the efficacy of Setmelanotide, a novel MCR4 agonist, in inducing sustained weight-loss (and other secondary outcomes) in a selected cohort of patients with rare genetic variants affecting the functioning of the Leptin-Melanocortin pathway. I am primarily responsible for the participants’ medical care and also carry out non-clinical duties, such as study coordination tasks, data management and communication with clinical research organisations and study sponsors. In addition to the above, I participate in multiple other clinical research projects in the field of genetic obesity, with similar clinical and non-clinical responsibilities. I really enjoy my work as part of the Farooqi team. There is a palpable enthusiasm that drives a constant aspiration to improving our performance, helping us work together towards our goal.
