IMS-MRL scientists discover what causes pregnancy sickness – and a potential new treatment

A study led by IMS-MRL researcher, Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly and published in Nature (Dec 2023) has shown why many women experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy – and why some women become so sick they need to be admitted to hospital. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating and sometimes even life-threatening condition. It’s not morning sickness. The discovery has huge implications for women’s health in the future and points to a potential way to prevent pregnancy sickness.
