The IMS-MRL is committed to investigate, monitor, and change research culture for the better. To achieve this objective, we have recruited the expertise of Dr Yeun Joon Kim, who has extensive experience in studying corporate research cultures. He has investigated research culture for several companies such as, Microsoft, Google, Samsung Electronics, and LG to name a few. He is currently based at the Judge Business School and has now joined the IMS-MRL as a PI.
Dr Kim will be conducting a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of IMS-MRL research culture starting in September 2025, and will be providing recommendations on how we can best change. The project will take two years and will involve extensive surveys and interviews with group leaders and group members, during which Dr Kim and his team will develop tools and methodologies for robustly monitoring research cultures. They will routinely report on their findings and progress.
Research culture has been extensively studied in the corporate world. To our knowledge, this project represents the first detailed look into research culture within academia and is therefore of great significance. The hope is that the tools and methodologies developed in the course of this study can be exported for use by other departments and universities.
