Research focus
My role is the day-to-day management of the Histopathology Core, providing services and facilities to our researchers.
Background and experience
I have always held an interest in biology and began my career as a junior histology technician soon after completing my A Levels. Over the years I have found myself working in a variety of areas including pharmaceuticals, clinical trials, and now academia. I joined the IMS-MRL to develop my laboratory and management skills.
Working at the IMS-MRL
I supervise the Histopathology core facility. The majority of my day involves processing a wide variety of tissue samples for microscopic analysis by researchers and pathologists. The techniques I use enable me to visualise many different structures, from fatty deposits and fibrosis, right down to single cells and individual RNA molecules. My work enables our researchers to observe the composition and characteristics of tissues in relation to their metabolic functions and diseases. If anyone would like to learn how to do all of this themselves, I can teach it too!
